Itinerary

Day 1 –Arrival in Djanet & Welcome to the Sahara
  • Arrival at Djanet Airport (via Algiers) and transfer to your guesthouse
  • Meet your Tuareg guide and group over mint tea and dates
  • Evening orientation walk through the oasis town of Djanet
  • Dinner and overnight in Djanet guesthouse
 
Day 2 – Entering Tassili: Ascent to the Plateau
  • Early morning 4WD to the base of Tassili’s sandstone cliffs
  • Trek up the escarpment to reach the plateau (moderate hike, approx. 2–3 hrs)
  • Explore the Tamrit plateau area: prehistoric rock shelters and giant cypress trees
  • Set up camp on the plateau with wide-open views over the desert
  • Dinner and overnight camping in the wild
 
Day 3 – Jabbaren: Ancient Rock Art Gallery
  • Hike to Jabbaren, one of the most famous rock art sites in the world
  • View detailed carvings and paintings of animals, humans, and rituals dating back over 10,000 years
  • Picnic lunch among rock formations
  • Continue trek through narrow canyons and lunar landscapes
  • Overnight wild camping near secluded petroglyph sites
 
Day 4 – Deep Desert Exploration
  • Full day trekking deeper into the Tassili plateau: dramatic cliffs, eroded arches, and vast open silence
  • Visit rarely-seen sites accessible only on foot guided by your Tuareg team
  • Learn about climate shifts and early Sahara life through natural and cultural history
  • Camp near the “Elephant Arch” or other stunning rock formation
  • Stargazing and traditional Tuareg stories around the fire
 
Day 5 – Descent & Return to 4WD Access
  • Gradual descent from the plateau, following ancient caravan paths
  • Meet your 4WD vehicles and continue by road through Tassili’s outer zones
  • Visit more accessible rock art sites and desert settlements
  • Overnight camping among the dunes, with a more relaxed pace
 
Day 6 – Tuareg Culture & Oasis Life
  • Return to Djanet and spend the day immersed in local culture
  • Optional visit to local Tuareg cooperatives: crafts, jewelry, and textiles
  • Explore palm groves and ancient irrigation systems in the oasis
  • Enjoy a farewell dinner with Tuareg music and stories
  • Overnight in Djanet guesthouse
 
Day 7 – Departure from Djanet
  • Free time in the morning for final rest or shopping
  • Airport transfer for departure via Algiers
  • End of tour
