Quick Answer
Yes. This private day trip from London connects three very different chapters of English history: Anglo Saxon Mercia at Tamworth, medieval power at Warwick Castle and Tudor England in Stratford upon Avon, including Shakespeare’s grave at Holy Trinity Church.
The Experience
Travel through nearly 1,000 years of English history in a single day. Begin in Tamworth, once an important centre of the Anglo Saxon Kingdom of Mercia and closely associated with Æthelflæd, Lady of the Mercians. Continue to Warwick Castle, where Saxon fortifications gave way to a Norman castle and later the power of figures such as Richard Neville, the Kingmaker. Finish in Stratford upon Avon at Holy Trinity Church, where Shakespeare was baptised and later buried. Along the way, explore how England changed from competing kingdoms into the country we recognise today.
Where & When?
The tour begins and ends in London, travelling north through the Midlands to Tamworth, Warwick and Stratford upon Avon. It can operate throughout much of the year, although spring to autumn offers longer daylight hours and more comfortable conditions for exploring the castles and Stratford on foot. Opening times at Tamworth Castle, Warwick Castle and Holy Trinity Church should be checked for each departure.
What to Expect
Expect a long but varied private day combining castles, royal history and Shakespeare. At Tamworth, explore Mercia and the period before England was politically unified. At Warwick Castle, move into Norman and later medieval England, including the Wars of the Roses. Stratford provides the Tudor chapter, ending at Shakespeare’s grave. The POV approach is to ask how much of the story is documented, how much has been shaped by later retelling and how England itself emerged from earlier kingdoms.
