Sri Lanka is wild in a way that sneaks up on you. One moment you’re sipping tea in the hills, and the next, you’re deep in a national park watching elephants wade through lotus-covered lakes.

Our safari took us through Yala National Park, home to the highest density of leopards in the world. The early mornings were spent scanning the dusty roads for tracks, the silence broken only by the alarm calls of langurs warning that something big was near. And then, out of nowhere, there it was a leopard lounging in the branches of a tree, golden eyes flicking toward us before it melted back into the jungle.

Elephants were everywhere, moving in slow, deliberate steps, dusting themselves with the golden sand. We even saw a tusker, one of the rare males with massive ivory tusks, a sight that’s becoming more uncommon as poaching takes its toll.

The trip ended in Wilpattu National Park, a wilder, less-traveled stretch of land where sloth bears wander and crocodiles lurk in the shallows. As the sun set, a lone elephant walked across the plains, framed against the glowing sky. A perfect end to a journey through Sri Lanka’s wild heart.
