Our latest trip to South Africa packed a lot into a short time, the kind of journey where every day feels completely different from the last.
We kicked things off in the ocean with two shark snorkels at Aliwal Shoal. Conditions were great, visibility was solid, and being in the water with these animals was exactly what you hope for - calm, powerful, and unforgettable. No cages, no noise, just drifting and watching sharks move effortlessly through their natural space.
From saltwater to wetlands, the pace shifted as we headed north. Three wetland safaris took us deep into lush landscapes filled with birdlife, crocodiles, and plenty of unexpected moments. These drives were relaxed, scenic, and constantly surprising- the kind where you never know what’s going to appear around the next bend. 2 Elephants for example, blocking the road for over 3 hours so we had to turn back. To find a herd of over 20 elephants blocking the return route.
One of the highlights was St Lucia, where wildlife doesn’t seem to respect boundaries. The hippo boat tour on the estuary delivered exactly what it promised, dozens of hippos lounging, grunting, and occasionally showing off their size. But the real fun came later, when we spotted hippos casually wandering the streets of St Lucia at night. Seeing animals like that sharing space with a town is something you don’t forget quickly.
We wrapped up the trip with a full safari day in Imfolzi park. Rolling hills, wide open views, and classic wildlife scenes, rhinos, buffalo, giraffes, and on our last tour there, 3 cheetahs. It was the perfect land-based counterpoint to the ocean experiences earlier in the trip.
Beyond the wildlife, what really stood out was the people. Friendly, welcoming, and always up for a chat - whether at lodges, on boats, or just passing through town.
This trip was a reminder of why South Africa works so well: sharks in the ocean, big game on land, wild places that still feel wild and an easygoing atmosphere that ties it all together. Busy days, great sightings and just the right balance of adventure and downtime.
We’ll be back - no question.
See it for yourself, in the water
You can read the science, or you can feel your heart rate settle as a mako slows to inspect you off Cabo San Lucas and then vanishes into the blue. These are not cage dives or baited spectacles. They are genuine encounters, in small groups, in wild water shared with the animals that have ruled the ocean for hundreds of millions of years. It changes how you see them for good.
